The Town of Dunkirk is a diverse community consisting of businesses, lakefront property, agriculture, and residential homes and was officially formed on November 17, 1859. The Town of Dunkirk is in Chautauqua County New York and divided by the City of Dunkirk into the East and West Towns. The Town has a total population of roughly 1,300 people.
Two town fire departments work tirelessly to protect our residents and are comprised of volunteers. They are known as the West Town of Dunkirk Fire Company and the East Town of Dunkirk Fire Company. Both Companies are always looking for new volunteers to add to their ranks and donations are always appreciated. These volunteers are vital to the safety of our residents and their property. For questions on how to join or donate, you may contact the Town Clerk’s office at 716-366-3967.
The east side of our town houses our busy business corridors. Vineyard Drive houses many options such as restaurants, clothing stores, grocery stores, and banking. Bennett Road (also known as Route 60) is our second business corridor where you will find additional restaurant options, a movie theatre, fitness center, professional offices, and educational facilities. It is also home to a large Nestle Purina pet food manufacturing facility that employs over 500 people and majorly impacts our local economy (https://www.purina.com/). As you travel the east side of town, you will see a majority of residential and agricultural areas that join our business corridors. Businesses can be found on our community tab.
The west side of our town consists of a variety of small businesses, lakefront property, and agriculture. It also includes an 18-hole golf course that offers a stunning view of Lake Erie. Information on the golf course can be found in our community tab or via their website (https://www.shorewoodcc.com/golf). Additionally, Canadaway Creek traverses the west side of our town and is known as a great fishing location to many fishermen across Chautauqua County and beyond. It is at the mouth of the Canadaway Creek where it meets Temple Road that you will find a marker for the War of 1812. It was at this location in September of 1812 that the first shots were fired in our area.
We welcome you to the Town of Dunkirk, where geographically we may be divided, but united we will stand for the best quality of life to our residents that we can offer.
